Legal advice regarding a staff member at post office?

Hi

We have a post office and a couple of days ago we got hustled by a guy who came in with euros in exchange for stearling then decided that he didnt want the stearling and wanted da 50 euro notes changed into 20euros..... the staff member who took the starling back didnt count it and jsut gave back the 50 euro notes saying we couldnt do that. in the mean time he had taken 拢550 of the stearling..... he walked off and the staff member realised 5mins later that something was wrong. she counted the money and was 拢550 down..... now all staff have individual stock units and individual money which no one else touches...... we have all of it on cctv camera as well on how she was careless and didnt count the money etc.....

we told her that it was her responsibility that she had to pay the money as she was the one that made the mistake and she said she didnt have a contract that said this was to be done! we had a verbal saying with the staff that the individual stocks were theres......but n contract.... is there anything we can do that would make her pay the money back....or any legal route we can take to get the money from her as it was her fault!

thanks in advanceLegal advice regarding a staff member at post office?
Sorry but at the end of the day it's your business and you have to stand the loss. As already said you should have Insurance to cover this. If you owned a jewellers and someone snatched a diamond ring out of your staffs hand she would not be expected to reimburse you.

Legally I don't think you have any recourse.Legal advice regarding a staff member at post office?
The business stands the loss.

But I HOPE you made out a police report for the theft. If you didn't do that, you're not doing your business any good.
Fraud is an expense of doing business - these people are professional at this (like the old shell game). Sure she should have done things differently, but you most likely have insurance in place to cover this type of thing or absorb it as a cost. I doubt you would have handled it differently yourself had you been the one receiving the fast action. There are all sorts of ways people do this - having someone cause a disturbance that draws the clerk attention away ore just fancy confusing ';oh I changed my mind'; BS. Why are you so intent on punishing this employee?
