Hello, I wonder whether anyone here could help me...
I am getting married next summer (I am in the UK), and the name I want to use doesn't quite match the name on my birth certificate. My husband-to-be is taking my name when we marry, so it's particularly important to us that we get this sorted out.
The examples given below are not my real names, but they explain my situation.
Suppose that I am called Mary Smith. I was Mary Smith right through school, my bank account and debit card are under the name Mary Smith, my name for national insurance purposes is Mary Smith.
Obviously, I want to get married as Mary Smith, and my other half wants to become Mr Smith.
However, the name on my birth certificate is actually Mary Smith-Evans.
Will I be able to drop the second half of the double barrel during the ceremony and on my marriage certificate (as I have been able to for every other important matter) or will I need to legally change my name to just Smith by deed poll or something first?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and I will award a Best Answer, as long as there is one. :-)

When you apply for the license you must use your legal name as shown on your birth certificate. However, the marriage certificate is issued as you wish it to be. That is why you can take your hubby's name or not, delete a hyphen or not, etc. That becomes your proof of change of name through marriage and that is what new brides take with them to motor vehicles for license change and new passports, etc. Get your license in your legal name and be sure you print out exactly how you wish it to appear on the certificate for (You'll probably get questions asking about the unusual step of a man taking his wife's last name - it's normal to be curious - like, is he hiding a past? but just ignore them. That wasn't part of your question!!)Legal Advice Needed - Wedding And The Name On My Birth Certificate (UK)?
You will need to change your name by deed poll. There is a difference in the 'name you go by' and your legal name and for the purpose of marriage you can only use your legal name.
